The Asian-Australian experience of ‘saving face’

Don’t Tell Anyone’ is the ironic name of this project. It’s dedicated to giving Asian immigrants a platform to share their stories. Victims of sexual or domestic abuse, depression, postnatal depression or abortion are often discouraged from openly talking about difficult topics. Their voices are silenced in the name of ‘saving face’.

Saving face is a non-negotiable for many
Asian families. It means protecting
your household’s privacy and
positively representing your family at
all costs. Deviance is not tolerated
and exposing your family to shame
or gossip is an abomination…

If you’ve suffered from these tragedies in the slightest and have been told to ‘get over it’ or ‘don’t tell anyone’ then this project is for you.
